"Melt" is about the journey of different emotions. The film begins in an old swimming pool where the various changing rooms evoke the concept of "sonder." Sonder is the idea that everyone—including strangers passing by on the street—has a life as complex as one’s own. Despite our personal lack of awareness of it, these people live lives filled with a spectrum of emotions and experiences. In this dance film, all these emotions melt together. Where water melts the ice and numbs the fire. Melt is about accepting both the soft and the hard emotions. These emotional opposites are further explored in the theater scenes, where the dancers, dressed in red and blue costumes, symbolize these polar opposites. As the film intensifies and the main character is overwhelmed by all these different feelings, she reaches a boiling point. She is overloaded and unable to process all these different stimuli. She retreats to a place of stillness, supposedly free from all these impulses. She longs for a space where she can float and be empty. However, she is once again confronted with her own mind, one she can never seem to escape. As she awakens, we enter a dream world, a utopian state in which only intimacy remains. It is breathtaking, between the sand and the water, the wind and the birds. But when reality drags you back down, the world can suddenly become very heavy again. Rather than presenting these emotions in a very clear-cut, over-the-top, and extreme way, we aimed to create a moving painting. Just like on a canvas, the color and shape of the dance are what convey the story. Rather than telling a clear-cut storyline, Melt aims to create an atmosphere that evokes a certain emotional state in the viewer. The conceptual aspect of the film remains abstract throughout, allowing the viewer to connect their own perception and meaning to the dance and images. Melt portrays whatever you need it to be. I believe that the connotations and meaning you derive from a work of art are merely a reflection of your own mind. The film invites you to open up so we can Melt together.
